Club Meeting: River, Rail or Religion: How the Genesis of Wilsonville and Its Neighbors Influenced Development

Former Wilsonville mayor and local historian Charlotte Lehan will discuss the early development of Wilsonville and surrounding cities just south of Portland.

Wilsonville and its neighboring cities had very different reasons for how and when they came to be in the locations they are. Learn how those distinctions influenced early development and still continue to direct their character and growth. In a brief overview we will compare the roots of a few of the cities of the lower Willamette Valley including Sherwood, Canby, Tualatin, Aurora, St. Paul, Oregon City, New Era, Newberg, and Butteville. How much do their original trajectories still hold?

About us: The Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. Guests are welcome. Lunch is available off the menu; please arrive and order by 11:45 a.m. if you are ordering lunch. For more information, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com.

Bio: Charlotte Lehan is a former Clackamas County Commissioner, former Wilsonville Mayor, and a seventh generation Wilsonville resident. She has lived in Wilsonville most of her life, and is a descendant of the Zumwalts, Grahams, and Youngs who were Wilsonville area pioneers of 1850, 1858, and 1865.

Local history has always been a passion for her. She is a board member of the Wilsonville Historical Society and president of Pleasant View Cemetery, one of Clackamas County’s largest historic cemeteries located two miles west of Wilsonville. She has served on the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, the State Heritage Tree Committee, and the Willamette Falls and Landings Coalition. She has updated and made accessible a large archive of historical information from the Wilsonville and Sherwood area related to local cemeteries and continues to make new discoveries about our past.
