In honor of World Polio Day, come to Wanker’s Corner Saloon & Café in Wilsonville on Thursday, October 15 for our annual Pints for Polio event. From open to close, Wanker’s will donate 10% of all food and beverage sales to Rotary’s fight against polio.
The evening will feature live music by the JT Wise Duo, featuring JT and Maggie Wise on guitar/vocals and bass/vocals. Together they perform high energy, good time music with deep grooves and strong harmonies. They perform classic covers as well as their own compositions, mixing bluesy, rootsy rock with jam music in the mold of the Grateful Dead. (Expect to hear some Dead favorites in their set!) They have performed at the Wilsonville Rotary Summer Concerts as well as all around the region, and we are glad to have them back for Pints for Polio this year!
Polio has been eliminated from most of the world, but it has not yet been eradicated. Cases still occur in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and as long as the virus exists anywhere it remains a threat everywhere. Without our fight against polio, there could be as many as 200,000 new cases every year within a decade. Rotary has made the fight to end polio a top priority since 1985, contributing more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize over 2.5 billion children. The Rotary Club of Wilsonville has raised nearly $120,000 over the years for this fight.
During the show, you can also paint your pinkie nail purple for $5 to show your support. The purple pinkie carries a special meaning. In countries where polio is still a danger, a child’s finger is marked with purple dye after receiving the life-saving vaccine. It is a simple mark that represents both protection and hope. At this event, you can show support by painting your pinkie nail purple for $5.
Every donation is matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation, so your $5 becomes $15. Let’s paint the town purple and help make history by ending polio for good!
