SUMMARY:Club Meeting:  History of Agriculture in French Prairie and Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Ben Williams\, resident of French Prairie and President of Friends of Historic Butteville\, will deliver an enlightening presentation on the History of Agriculture in French Prairie and Oregon. Native American cultures thrived in French Prairie long before the arrival of non-native settlers. The unique characteristics of French Prairie attracted early settlers\, particularly French-Canadian settlers in the 1830s\, who married Kalapuya women and started farming near St. Paul. By the end of the 18th century\, French Prairie had become Oregon’s most productive agricultural area\, known for its wheat and hops production. This rich agricultural history laid the foundation for the region’s lasting significance as Oregon’s historic and agricultural heartland. The presentation will explore whether French Prairie will continue to play a central role in the State’s agricultural economy and heritage. \nIn 1843\, the first “democratic vote west of the Mississippi River” occurred at Champoeg\, deciding to align Oregon Country with the United States instead of Canada. This pivotal moment in history is commemorated at the Pioneer Monument and Pavilion at Champoeg State Park. Ben Williams will delve into the deep agricultural roots of French Prairie\, exploring how its development influenced Oregon’s path to statehood and shaped the region’s identity. This presentation offers valuable insights into the historical and agricultural legacy that defines French Prairie and its ongoing importance in Oregon’s heritage. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. He was born and raised overseas\, moving back to the US for college. He graduated from College of Southern Utah and holds an MA from Fuller Theological Seminary. He spent his career in various sales leadership positions in the medical device industry. Ben has been involved in leadership development programs in both the corporate and nonprofit space. He was part of founding Friends of French Prairie a local land use advocacy organization\, and serves on the board of Friends of Historic Butteville and most recently on the board of 1000 Friends of Oregon. \n\n\n	Related
