SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Catering to Different Learning Styles
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Louise Debreczeny is owner\, chief executive officer and consultant at The Institute for Neurosemantic and Sociocognitive Learning LLC (INSL LLC). Most students are visual thinkers\, but schools generally use teaching strategies aimed at auditory thinkers. This means that many students are left behind because the way information is being presented to them does not match how their brains learn. To bridge this gap\, visual thinking strategies based on the Dr. Ellyn Lucas Arwood’s revolutionary Neurosemantic Language Learning Theory can be used by educators and parents to provide meaningful learning opportunities for all students. Louise will provide an introduction to Dr. Arwood’s learning theory and what we can do to help learners in our community.  \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. The club is holding hybrid “Virtual In Person” (VIP) meetings. People may attend in person\, or they may use Zoom (http://www.tinyurl.com/Rotary97070). Guests are welcome. Masks are required for in-person attendance except when eating\, drinking or speaking at the microphone. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nDr. Debreczeny completed her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree with an emphasis in Neuroeducation at the University of Portland in 2019 and was supervised by Dr. Ellyn Arwood (creator of the Neurosemantic Language Learning Theory) through that process. She is both a general education and a special education teacher specializing in working with students\, parents\, and educators using the Neurosemantic Language Learning Theory. Her training includes a Master in Teaching degree in elementary education K-8 from City University of Seattle (2008)\, followed by a special education endorsement from the City University of Seattle (2010). She completed a postgraduate certificate in Neuroeducation from the University of Portland in 2015\, and then went on to complete her doctoral degree in education in 2019. Debreczeny has also participated in numerous workshops\, classes and trainings on language and learning and is very excited about the progress she sees students make using the Viconic Language Methods™ developed from Arwood’s Neurosemantic Language Learning Theory. She holds a Professional Teaching Certificate from the State of Washington and worked for eight years in public schools prior to becoming a consultant with APRICOT Inc.\, where she worked for more than seven years before opening the INSL LLC. Debreczeny has a varied background and brings experiences from many walks of life to her work with students\, parents\, and educators. Previously\, Debreczeny worked in horticulture for 20 years\, including being a North Carolina Registered Landscape Contractor and Certified Plantsman. Prior to her horticulture career\, Debreczeny was a classical musician and completed six years of conservatory training in orchestral performance and earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (1984). Debreczeny also served in the North Carolina Army National Guard in the 1980’s attaining the rank of Sergeant E-5. \n

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: What's Important to You About Your Work?
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been taught to believe that what’s important to us about our work is different from what’s important in our personal lives. Guest speaker Deborah Allen will make the case that one’s professional and personal values can be aligned in both settings. She will explain how this creates opportunities to have more meaning and fulfillment in work\, relationships and all aspects of life. \nDeborah Allen began her career teaching art in K-8 schools. Over time\, art was defunded and her classroom became a closet\, so she became a second grade teacher until her patience ran dry and her nerves were shot. Deborah was an operational leader in educational and art nonprofits and government agencies for over 15 years specializing in human resources\, learning and development\, and mentoring and coaching. With a pandemic layoff in 2020\,  she wanted to find more fulfillment in her work and launched Talk Steady\, a leadership coaching business for women. Deborah holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as well as a Master of Education degree. She is a Society of Human Resources-certified professional (or SHRM-CP) in human resources work\, holds an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential from the International Coaching Federation\, and is certified by the Academy of Leadership Coaching and NLP (neurolinguistic programming) as a as a leadership coach. \n

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Jerome Kersey: Overcoming the Odds
DESCRIPTION:Local author Kerry Eggers tells the rags-to-riches life story of Jerome Kersey\, one of the most successful and popular players in Portland Trail Blazers history\, in his latest book\, “Jerome Kersey: Overcoming the Odds.” Kersey died in 2015 of a pulmonary embolism at age 52. The biography was released in October by Dementi Milestone Publishing of Manakin-Sabot\, Va. Eggers will give a presentation on the book and have autographed copies available for sale. \nEggers\, who retired in 2020 after 45 years writing sports for Portland newspapers\, is a six-time winner of the Oregon Sportswriter of the Year Award. This is his eighth book. The others: Blazers Profiles (1991)\, Against the World (1993\, with co-author Dwight Jaynes)\, Wherever You May Be: The Bill Schonely Story (1999)\, Clyde “The Glide” Drexler: My Life in Basketball (2004)\, Oregon State University Football Vault (2009)\, The Civil War Rivalry: Oregon vs. Oregon State (2014) and Jail Blazers: How the Portland Trail Blazers Became the Bad Boys of Basketball (2018). \nAs Cinderella stories go\, Kersey’s is at the top of the list. Raised by grandparents in rural Virginia in the 1960’s and ‘70s\, Kersey was among the least likely of all eventual NBA stars. A late bloomer as a basketball player\, he was overlooked by college scouts. He signed with Longwood College in nearby Farmville\, Va.\, which was just making the transition from NCAA Division III to Division II. Kersey became a four-year starter and a small-college All-American but received little notice from NBA scouts. He was chosen with the 46th pick and taken in the second round of the 1984 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. Kersey\, one of the game’s greatest dunkers and high-energy players through his long career\, played 11 of his 17 NBA seasons in Portland. He was a starter and key cog on a Portland team that reached the NBA Finals in both 1990 and ’92\, and as a veteran reserve won a championship ring with the San Antonio Spurs in ’99.  \nKersey’s story is one of perseverance and also of making a deep commitment to community and civic contributions. After his retirement as a player\, he served many years as an ambassador to the Blazers and was working as the club’s director of alumni relations when he passed away.\nProceeds from the sales of the general edition of the book will go to the Jerome Kersey ’84 men’s basketball scholarship at Longwood University in Farmville\, Va. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Treating Tooth Decay in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Wilsonville resident Dr. Steve Duffin\, DDS\, been working on a new approach to treating tooth decay for 15 years. This method involves treating tooth decay with medicine rather than using needles and drills and placing fillings in the traditional manner. He and his team have been collaborating with partners in Latin America to bring a simple\, effective and low cost treatment to community centers. Recently\, he spent a month in the city of Cochabamba\, Bolivia\, in the Andes Mountain range. He worked at a primary school where the level of tooth decay is extremely high and two-thirds of the children have mouth pain related to cavities. He will talk about his recent trip there and what was accomplished. \nDr. Duffin earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology in 1979 from the University of California at Los Angeles. he graduated with a doctorate in dental surgery from Emory University in Atlanta\, Georgia in 1983 and is a licensed and certified dentist in Oregon and California.
