SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Empowering Families in the Community
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mayra Gómez\, Cindy Lindsley and Maria de Lourdes Horton of the West Linn-Wilsonville District will speak about how the Family Empowerment Center is empowering families in the larger West Linn and Wilsonville communities\, and helping them adjust to the circumstances of the pandemic.  \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets every Thursday at noon\, living out the club’s main objectives of service and fellowship. Guests are always welcome. Meetings take place on Zoom. Contact President Joe Schwab at president@wilsonvillerotary.com\, or any member of the club for details. \n\nDr. Mayra Gómez was born and raised in Los Angeles\, California. At 15\, her family moved to Oregon where she graduated from Roosevelt High School in North Portland. She obtained a bachelor of science in public policy planning and a bachelor of art in sociology and Spanish from the University of Oregon in 2002. She went on to pursue her master’s degree in urban education at the University of California-Los Angeles. She began her teaching career as a middle school social studies teacher in Los Angeles. \nOnce in Oregon she served as the AVID coordinator\, social studies and English language development teacher at Gresham High School. As an administrator\, she has held the positions of assistant principal at Reynolds High School and Federal Programs Coordinator at Centennial School District.  She earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Curriculum Development from Lewis and Clark College in the spring of 2017 and is currently the director of college and career readiness in West Linn-Wilsonville School District. She remains active in the Gresham community as Vice Chair of the Gresham-Barlow School Board and Board Chair of El Programa Hispano. Her passion is empowering and encouraging marginalized youth to pursue a higher education\, be change agents in their communities and serve as mentors to younger generations. Dr. Gómez credits her success to the mentorship of community members who believed in her and the endless support and encouragement from her family. Now she strives to do the same for her students. \n\n\nCindy Lindsley grew up and graduated from the neighboring city of Canby. During her youth\, she competed against West Linn-Wilsonville athletic teams. She also worked at the Wilsonville movie theater. Cindy was also raised with a strong growth mindset from her parents\, who worked within the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. Perhaps safe to say\, Cindy was an honoree WLWV district community member from a young age. Upon graduating from the University of Oregon in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and business\, she dove into the events industry as a caterer\, florist\, designer\, and finally launched her own wedding coordination business in 2015. Alongside her venture as a small business owner\, Cindy served as the director of special events at the Hillsboro Chamber and found great joy in connecting with community members. During her time with the chamber\, the largest event\, the Hillsboro Latino Cultural Celebration\, attracted over 10\,000 people. \nFast forward a couple years and Cindy entered the West Linn-Wilsonville School District family as the Community Services Manager. In this role\, she helps to monitor the district’s safety and security plans\, school boundaries\, facility use/coordination\, and community activities integrated into the district. In 2020 when the pandemic hit\, Cindy’s department pivoted and accepted oversight of the district’s newly launched Family Empowerment Center. Cindy believes that the schools are the hearts of the community\, and that while the pandemic has hit hard\, in ways it’s also made us stronger than ever before. ‘In the rush to return back to normal\, use this time to consider which parts of normal are worth returning back to’ (by unknown). \n\nMaria de Lourdes Horton is the bilingual family engagement specialist at the Family Empowerment Center. She holds an architectural degree from the School of Architecture at the University Autonomous of Yucatan in Mexico. She also has an asssociate’s degree in teaching English as a communication tool. In Mexico she worked for an architectural firm as well as an English teacher for the high school section of the school she attended since kindergarten. She came to Oregon 21 years ago when she got married\, and is now a U.S. citizen. She and her husband lead a family of nine: two adults\, two teen boys\, two dogs\, two birds and one cat.\n \nMaria has worked for the district for 18 years. She started working in the fall of 2002 as the secretary/registrar at Boones Ferry Primary School in Wilsonville. After 10 years she became head secretary at Lowrie Primary School\, when it opened its doors in the fall of 2012\, where she remained until the fall of 2018. She then got a position at the school district office as an administrative assistant for the human resources department. In the spring of 2020\, as the pandemic crisis arose\, her work changed direction. She began connecting families in the community to the resources they needed for the switch to online learning. That summer\, she accepted the position of bilingual family engagement specialist\, and since last October\, she has been working at the newly formed West Linn-Wilsonville Family Empowerment Center.\n \nMaria enjoys art and watching movies and documentaries. She loves the Pacific Northwest\, as her maternal line passed through this area a few thousand years ago.

DESCRIPTION:Financial advisor Alicia Itzaina will discuss factors to consider so that retirement income will last through your lifetime. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. The club is holding hybrid “Virtual In Person” (VIP) meetings. Attend in person (if masked or vaccinated) at Al Kader Shrine Center\, or attend virtually over Zoom at http://www.tinyurl.com/Rotary97070. Guests are welcome. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nAlicia is a Financial Advisor at Capstone Wealth Advisors. Alicia has been in the financial industry since 2006\, starting in banking. She officially began to work in the capacity of Financial Advisor in 2017. Alicia remembers all too well the difficulty of understanding how to prepare for college when no one in the family has gone before.  \nA pivotal and defining moment in her financial career came during the Great Recession of 2008. During that time\, she witnessed how good financial advice could greatly improve a client’s quality of life in times of financial uncertainty. This is also when she became fascinated with the concept of behavioral finance\, the study of the influence of psychology on the behavior of investors. By coupling her years of financial industry experience with her understanding of the psychology of money\, she helps clients reach their financial goals\, maximize their portfolios\, and most importantly\, manage risk. \nWhen she is not serving clients\, she enjoys giving back to the community and you will often find her spending time outdoors biking\, hiking\, kayaking\, camping\, and fishing. She and her husband\, Blaze\, have two Rottweiler pups\, Odin and Eisa. \n

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Education – A Crisis of Relevance
DESCRIPTION:Former school administrator Michael C. Johnson will give a presentation on the inadequacies of our current system of public education. He is concerned that our current instructional approaches and curriculum expectations are vestiges of the past\, rather than directions that will adequately prepare students for their futures. Further\, he remains convinced that our current educational system lacks the opportunity for many students to realize personal relevance with their studies. Finally\, he is adamant in his belief that the American public education system must move past a pre-occupation with standardized teaching and learning; the very focus that stands in the way of a truly authentic and contemporary learning experience for today’s children.  \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. The club is holding hybrid “Virtual In Person” (VIP) meetings. Attend in person (if masked or vaccinated)\, or attend virtually over Zoom at http://www.tinyurl.com/Rotary97070. Guests are welcome. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nAt the time of his retirement in July 2017\, Michael had served students over a 35 year career in public education: 14 years as a performing arts teacher and 21 years as a building administrator. Throughout his career\, and continuing into his retirement\, he is a vocal advocate of arts education and the inclusion of quality arts experiences for all children\, and remains a champion of student-centered approaches to assure a high quality and relevant education for every child. He earned his bachelor degree in music education at Willamette University and his masters in educational leadership from the University of Portland\, with additional administrative studies at Lewis and Clark College and Portland State University.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: District Governor Jim Boyle
DESCRIPTION:Rotary District 5100 Governor Jim Boyle will be our guest speaker. Raised in the Chicagoland area\, Jim and his wife\, Nancy\, have lived in West Linn\, Oregon for the past 25 years. Jim worked at a variety of Fortune 500 companies over the past 30 years prior to leading two consumer electronics companies. After leaving corporate life\, Jim fed his entrepreneur spirit by building and developing high end residential properties and teaching MBA classes. Jim and Nancy raised one son\, Ryan\, and enjoy spending time with and entertaining their two grandchildren. Aside from traveling internationally\, Jim enjoys playing pickleball\, taking challenging hikes\, and is an avid reader. Rotary found Jim when his club held a service project that benefited a women’s shelter and it involved the entire community. He realized then how significantly a small but committed number of Rotarians can impact a community. Through service\, Jim and Nancy have developed lasting friendships and a network that spans the world. Jim has sponsored 24 new members and believes the WORLD NEEDS MORE ROTARIANS.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Cumulative Disasters
DESCRIPTION:Fire. Smoke. Ice. Heat. It’s been a rough year or so for Oregon\, with several weather-related disasters hitting the state’s landscape in ways seldom seen before. And no one is more intimately connected with Oregon’s landscape than farmers. Nurseries are the largest segment in Oregon agriculture with more than $1 billion in sales annually. As executive director of the Oregon Association of Nurseries\, Jeff Stone represents the industry before the public and before the state’s elected leaders. It’s his job to marshal resources\, build coalitions and help solve problems facing the industry. Jeff will speak about the disasters of last 12 months\, how they have affected growers\, and what is being done — or not being done — to assist this valuable sector of the Oregon economy that contributes to the green landscape\, both in this state and nationwide. \nNOTE: Previously scheduled speaker Anne-Louise Sterry had to postpone her presentation due to a family matter and we will make every effort to reschedule her for a future date. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. SUMMARY:Club Meeting: How PT Can Help with Posture and Stiffness
DESCRIPTION:There are more than 600 individual skeletal muscles in the human body\, providing strength and stability.  The muscles and joints are designed to work together to create your mobility.  Our modern lifestyle\, personal fitness regimes\, and choice of good/bad behaviors often cause us to strengthen some muscles\, others get weak and our joints can get stiff. If this weakness and stiffness persists over decades\, the neural pathways that allow your mind to control your movement become dormant.  Physical therapists will begin by observing your posture\, gait and movement patterns. Then\, by assessing the range of motion in your joints and your overall flexibility\, he or she will have a clear picture of where your muscle imbalances are.  Renée James will discuss dynamic movements that will re-awaken dormant neural connections that may be inhibiting your muscles from activating in the right sequence.  \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. The club is holding hybrid “Virtual In Person” (VIP) meetings. Attend in person (masks required except when eating) at Al Kader Shrine Center\, or attend virtually over Zoom at http://www.tinyurl.com/Rotary97070. Guests are welcome. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nRenée along with her husband\, Jason James\, started Boones Landing Physical Therapy here in Wilsonville three years ago. She grew up in Redwood Falls\, Minnesota.  She attended North Dakota State University receiving a B.S in Exercise Science. She then attended University of Minnesota for her masters in physical therapy graduating in 2002.    Rene’e is an orthopedic board certified specialist who specializes in running related injuries\, post concussion rehab\, post operative shoulder\, spinal\, knee and ankle rehab. She sees many running enthusiasts that are working towards an easy 5K fun run as well as those that are training for New York or Boston marathon. She has assisted with triathlete clinics and participated in the training of high school and college runners. During Renée’s career\, she has had the opportunity to work in a multitude of physical therapy settings including three years of contract work around the United States.
