SUMMARY:Club Meeting:  Update from a Former Exchange Student
DESCRIPTION:Anna Knill\, a Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Switzerland (2016-2017)\, became the first exchange student through the Rotary Club of Wilsonville when it resumed its program in 2016. She spent almost a year in Wilsonville\, attending the High School\, joining Rotary events\, and living with three host families. After six years\, she is now coming back to revisit her “second home” in the United States. She will share memories from her time here\, talk about what she has been doing since then\, and talk about the impact Rotary Youth Exchange has had on her life. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nOfficial bio:  In 2016-2017\, Anna Knill was a Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Switzerland and spent almost a year in Wilsonville. During that time\, she had the opportunity to make many new and lifelong memories and friendships\, improve her English\, and learn more about the United States and herself. After returning to Switzerland\, she studied Health Science and Technologies for her bachelor’s at ETH Zurich then continued her education at the same institution with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. \nCurrently\, Anna is a PhD candidate specializing in Rehabilitation Engineering at the RELab of ETH Zurich and the Cereneo Foundation. Her focus is on manual dexterity\, better understanding of upper limb impairments after neurological injury\, and implementing novel assessments into the clinic to enhance the lives of individuals in rehabilitation. \nAlongside her academic pursuits\, Anna remains to be a passionate athlete (doing mainly triathlon) and loves to spend time with her friends and family. She is a member of the HackaHealth association that organizes Hackathons to craft personalized solutions for daily living for people with disabilities.  She volunteers for events like the CYBATHLON\, where people with disabilities compete in everyday tasks using assistive technologies.

DESCRIPTION:Aquiles Montas\, bandleader of Conjunto Alegre\, will be speaking on Caribbean Latin Music in Oregon.  Since coming to Portland 45 years ago\, Aquiles has been a leader in promoting Latin Caribbean culture in Oregon and Washington. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nAquiles Montas is the bandleader for the Latin music group Conjunto Alegre\, which has performed in Oregon and Washington for more than 35 years. He immigrated from the Dominican Republic and has been a resident of the Portland area for 45 years. He graduated from Grant High School in Portland then earned his degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Portland State University. He also studied small business management at Portland Community College. He currently works for Multnomah County as the director of a youth enrichment program in the Northeast Cully neighborhood. He is a proud husband\, father\, and now grandfather. \nIn 1984\, Aquiles joined forces with his Dominican friend Pedro Beltran and his Puerto Rican friend Amador Marcano to form the Latin music band Ritmo Tropical. In 1987\, he broke away and formed Conjunto Alegre (Spanish for “happy band”). That band is still performing all around Oregon and Washington 36 years later\, including at the 2023 Wilsonville Rotary Summer Concerts on August 3. He was selected to play for Cirque Du Soleil in 1999 in Portland and 2000 in Seattle\, and has performed and presented at many local events and college campuses. His passion has always been helping people\, particularly recent immigrants to find housing\, jobs\, and health care and with learning the English language. He helps them make connections and find friends through the larger Latin community in the Portland area. \nHis hobbies and interests include teaching\, Spanish\, English\, dancing\, percussion\, cooking\, history\, geography and politics. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nOfficial bio:  Gale Castillo is the president and co-owner of Canopy\, one of the largest privately held companies that provides a variety of mental health and wellbeing services globally. Canopy has been recognized by the Portland Business Journal in 2023 as the number one small business “Healthiest Employers” and one of the top innovative companies in Oregon Business Employers. \nCastillo is also the chair of the Board of Directors of the Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber (Hispanic Chamber). Castillo previously served as the president and executive director of the Hispanic Chamber for over 20 years. She is one of the founders of the Hispanic Chamber that was established in 1994. \nCastillo has worked in both the public and private sector.  Public service has included working as an assistant to Gov. Neil Goldschmidt\, recommending appointments to boards and commissions.  Ms. Castillo was appointed by the governor as the state manager of the Oregon Economic Development Department’s Job Training Administration. In the private sector\, Ms. Castillo has worked for AT&T\, Pacific Northwest Bell\, and RESTOR Communications in management\, marketing\, and national sales positions. \nCastillo has been recognized by many groups over the years for her community service. The most recent awards include: \n\n2023-The Portland Business Journal Women of Influence\, Joan Austin Impact Award\, the highest award for this event.\n2022-The Mexican Consul of Oregon presented Ms. Castillo with the Ohtli Award\, the highest honor bestowed by the Government of Mexico to individuals that have worked to “open the path” for new Mexican Americans and Hispanic generations.\n2019-Recognized by the Oregon Historical Society as one of “Oregon’s History Makers”.\n2016-Congressman Earl Blumenauer recognized Ms. Castillo at his Annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon for outstanding service.\n2014-Ms. Castillo was presented with the Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement for the Minority Enterprise Development Week by the Business Development Institute for playing an integral role in the progress of minority business development.\nAlso in 2014-Ms. Castillo received a Civic award by the Center for Women’s Leadership.\n\nMs. Castillo has provided community services to a variety of organizations. Her current community involvements include: \n\nHispanic Metropolitan Chamber\, Board Chair\nFederal Reserve Bank of San Francisco\, Portland Branch\, Board Member\nAmerican Leadership Forum\, Class IV Fellow and\nInternational Women’s Forum\, Portland\n\nMs. Castillo is the first in her family to graduate from high school and college. She earned her bachelor of arts from Linfield University\, followed by a master of arts in education from Portland State University. She also completed the Executive Education Program at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government\, and the Leadership Development Program at the Center for Creative Leadership. \nMs. Castillo is Mexican-American. Her family is originally from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas\, which was originally part of Mexico. The past eight years\, she’s been a Project Manager in the Portland office leading teams through engineering design of large highway projects. One of those was the design of the OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project. Once it began construction\, she shifted roles to work in the construction office assisting leadership in the day to day operations. \nLili Boicourt\, a nearly 20-year employee of ODOT works in the Community Affairs office leading outreach activities for many of the highway construction projects in the Portland-metro area. She was on the OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes project team that Kelly led and continues to manage all outreach and communications efforts for that project. \n

DESCRIPTION:Sujan Shadrak will speak about Water Project in India.  He created a fundraiser to buy reusable stainless steel water bottles for underprivileged kids in India.  Sujan has used the money raised from GoFundMe and from the generous donations of members of Wilsonville Rotary Club to buy reusable stainless steel water bottles. His main initiative for a reusable water bottle fundraiser was from his grandparents\, who told him about the single-use plastic water bottles that kids in underprivileged areas used and threw away on a daily basis. He has great interest in reducing plastic waste as he has researched bioplastics in hope of developing a sustainable biodegradable plastic that can one day replace plastic all around the world. DESCRIPTION:Joan Palmateer\, Superintendent at Coffee Creek\, will be speaking on Gender Informed Practices at CCCF (Coffee Creek Correctional Facility).  Joan co-founded the Through a Child’s Eyes (TACE) program\, a partnership between the Oregon Department of Corrections and the Rotary Club of Wilsonville. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nOfficial Bio: \nJoan Palmateer spent 30 years working in Oregon’s correctional facilities\, starting as a correctional officer and eventually becoming the first female warden at the Oregon State Penitentiary in its 150-year history in 1998\, and the founding superintendent of Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville in 2001. She also served as prison administrator for the Oregon Department of Corrections\, responsible for oversight of 13 superintendents in 14 prisons across the entire system ranging from minimum to super maximum security. She also spent three years with the Oregon Youth Authority as assistant director of facilities and operations.  \nAfter retirement she has continued with consulting and other work\, and will be presenting on the Gender Informed Practices Assessment\, or GIPA\, at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility. The GIPA provides prisons with a measured assessment of their adherence to sound principles of gender responsive\, trauma-informed\, and evidence-based policies\, programming\, and practices\, from admission to release. Specifically\, it explores the degree to which a facility has implemented these approaches.

She has also worked in the political field\, having served as a Transportation Policy Advisor to Congressman Blumenauer and Legislative Assistant for the Oregon State Senate.  \nZoie Wesenberg earned a bachelor of science degree in environmental studies and geography from the University of Oregon Clark Honors College and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Portland State University.  \nHeather Wills has an extensive background with federal agencies managing complicated projects and programs. She served as project manager for a $2.3 million environmental impact statement on the Southwest Corridor Light Rail Project for Metro and TriMet. While with the Federal Highway Administration\, Western Federal Lands Highway Division\, she led a team of environmental specialists collaborating with federal and local project partners to determine the most efficient method for delivering an annual $150 million program of projects. \nHeather Wills earned a bachelor of science degree in environmental science\, a master’s degree in urban and regional planning\, and a project management professional graduate certificate from Portland State University. She is a member of the National Association of Environmental Professionals and the Women’s Transportation Seminar. \nHeather was recently honored by the Daily Journal of Commerce Oregon with the Women of Vision Award.

She was a consultant for eight years prior to transitioning to public service in 2009.\nMarlys began her public service as the Portland Public Schools facilities liaison to Portland Parks & Recreation and to the communities surrounding each school facility.   She resolved conflicts\, developed partnerships\, coordinated the completion of the Long Range Facilities Plan and secured grants to improve the District’s facilities. \nMarlys currently manages the outreach team for the $1.6 billion Willamette Water Supply Program. She has been with the City for over seven years\, and is currently managing implementation of the 2019 Town Center Plan. Prior to joining the City\, she spent eight years as a planner in the Washington D.C. metro area. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Urban Studies from Ohio Wesleyan University\, and a Master of City and Regional Planning from Ohio State. \nMatt Lorenzen has been the economic development manager for the City of Wilsonville since December 2021. He began his career as a high school social science teacher and then pivoted to work in commercial real estate development\, where he discovered the world of economic development. Before working in Wilsonville\, he held the same position in the City of Estacada for nearly 6 years. Oregon is home now\, but he is originally from Phoenix\, Arizona. He has lived in West Linn for 10 years\, with his wife and 3 kids. Matt has a master’s degree in public administration and recently earned the Certified Economic Developer credential from the International Economic Development Council.

He has been involved with Wilsonville football since 1998.  He was the Wilsonville Youth Sports Football Director for 13 years. \nHe has a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Washington University\, where he played football. Andrea approaches her work with a passion for advocating for young people and their families to establish permanent\, healthy relationships and stable housing.  \nA long-time Oregon resident\, Andrea earned her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology at Lewis & Clark College and a Master’s of Science of Communication from Portland State University. She was the District 5100 Trainer for 3 years. \nRenee is married to Rob Brouse\, and they have two kids: Brittany and Brandon. Brandon lives in Sherwood.  \nRenee and Rob have been active in the Youth Exchange Program since 2007. They are District 5100 Benefactors\, supporting The Rotary Foundation as Paul Harris Society and Bequest Society members. Renee enjoys camping\, traveling\, hiking\, and spending time with her grandkids. \nRenee is a proud graduate of Indiana University and studied for a Master’s in Business through Kennedy Western University. In 2010\, John played a pivotal role in co-founding the Pacific Northwest District Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program\, in partnership with Seattle Childrens Hospital and British Columbia Childrens Hospital\, showcasing his deep commitment to aiding children with cancer. \nPersonal Life \nIn his personal life\, John has shared a 49-year-long journey with his wife Deborah. Together\, they have raised three children and now enjoy three granddaughters.  John’s academic achievements include earning dual degrees in Business and Organizational Psychology from Portland State University in 1973. \nDiverse Career \nJohn’s professional life is marked by diversity and adventure. From obtaining his first business license at the age of 12\, he has embraced various roles including a trapper\, Arctic explorer\, Alaska Pipeline teamster\, and a wholesale grocer to Alaska’s bush villages. His entrepreneurial ventures extended into areas like newspaper publishing\, beauty supply\, furniture manufacturing\, and hardwood flooring importation. John also contributed globally as a Small Business Trade Consultant to the People’s Republic of China. \nRetirement and Continued Dedication \nEven after retiring in 2016\, John’s passion for combating children’s cancer remains undiminished. He firmly believes that children should not suffer from cancer and is committed to the Kiwanis Doernbecher Childrens Cancer Program\, striving to end cancer in children and leave a lasting legacy in this vital cause.
