Under his leadership\, this past June\, Oregon Tech was officially designated as “Oregon’s Polytechnic University” by the Oregon Legislative Assembly through House Bill 2472A\, which was signed into law by Gov. Kate Brown. During the last four years\, under his leadership\, Oregon Tech has secured capital and supplementary operating budgets of more than $90M to build a new engineering and technology building and to renovate other instructional and athletic facilities at Oregon Tech. In addition\, he has begun or expanded several new partnerships with industries\, including corporate and higher education collaborations such as OMIC R&D and Oregon Tech’s first doctoral program in physical therapy\, in partnership with OHSU. Enrollment of new freshmen at Oregon Tech has now increased for three successive years. This\, in turn\, has helped Oregon Tech secure bonding authority of $55.6M to build a new residence hall on the Klamath Falls campus. This project is in addition to the more than $90M in capital projects mentioned earlier. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. Masks are required for in-person attendance except when eating\, drinking or speaking at the microphone. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nBefore joining Oregon Tech\, Dr. Naganathan served as dean of the College of Engineering at The University of Toledo for 15 years; was UT’s interim president during 2014-15; and was a member of the faculty since 1986. As dean\, he led the UT College of Engineering to achieve historically high student enrollment and implemented a mandatory co-operative experience program for all students – one of only eight in the nation – to exceed 18\,000 placements\, in partnership with more than 2\,500 employers\, in 44 states and 37 countries. He has served as a consultant for many industries and as a board member for various organizations. He has earned the prestigious rank of Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers\, among other recognitions.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Being Light in Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Mike Tatlock of Grace Chapel will talk about the congregation’s new building and its initiative to support community organizations outside of the church through the use of the space. Partnering and proximity go together as we work side by side and share resources to increase the brightness for our community and those around us. He has been one of the youngest teaching professors at Prairie College and Multnomah College and an adjunct professor at Western Grad School in Portland\, Oregon. SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Jerome Kersey: Overcoming the Odds
DESCRIPTION:Local author Kerry Eggers tells the rags-to-riches life story of Jerome Kersey\, one of the most successful and popular players in Portland Trail Blazers history\, in his latest book\, “Jerome Kersey: Overcoming the Odds.” Kersey died in 2015 of a pulmonary embolism at age 52. The biography was released in October by Dementi Milestone Publishing of Manakin-Sabot\, Va. Eggers will give a presentation on the book and have autographed copies available for sale. \nEggers\, who retired in 2020 after 45 years writing sports for Portland newspapers\, is a six-time winner of the Oregon Sportswriter of the Year Award. This is his eighth book. The others: Blazers Profiles (1991)\, Against the World (1993\, with co-author Dwight Jaynes)\, Wherever You May Be: The Bill Schonely Story (1999)\, Clyde “The Glide” Drexler: My Life in Basketball (2004)\, Oregon State University Football Vault (2009)\, The Civil War Rivalry: Oregon vs. Oregon State (2014) and Jail Blazers: How the Portland Trail Blazers Became the Bad Boys of Basketball (2018). \nAs Cinderella stories go\, Kersey’s is at the top of the list. Raised by grandparents in rural Virginia in the 1960’s and ‘70s\, Kersey was among the least likely of all eventual NBA stars. A late bloomer as a basketball player\, he was overlooked by college scouts. He signed with Longwood College in nearby Farmville\, Va.\, which was just making the transition from NCAA Division III to Division II. Kersey became a four-year starter and a small-college All-American but received little notice from NBA scouts. He was chosen with the 46th pick and taken in the second round of the 1984 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. Kersey\, one of the game’s greatest dunkers and high-energy players through his long career\, played 11 of his 17 NBA seasons in Portland. He was a starter and key cog on a Portland team that reached the NBA Finals in both 1990 and ’92\, and as a veteran reserve won a championship ring with the San Antonio Spurs in ’99.  \nKersey’s story is one of perseverance and also of making a deep commitment to community and civic contributions. After his retirement as a player\, he served many years as an ambassador to the Blazers and was working as the club’s director of alumni relations when he passed away.\nProceeds from the sales of the general edition of the book will go to the Jerome Kersey ’84 men’s basketball scholarship at Longwood University in Farmville\, Va. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. The club is holding hybrid “Virtual In Person” (VIP) meetings. People may attend in person\, or they may use Zoom (http://www.tinyurl.com/Rotary97070). Guests are welcome. SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Treating Tooth Decay in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Wilsonville resident Dr. Steve Duffin\, DDS\, been working on a new approach to treating tooth decay for 15 years. This method involves treating tooth decay with medicine rather than using needles and drills and placing fillings in the traditional manner. The vast percentage of people with untreated tooth decay cannot receive care in a traditional dental office due to cost and availability. He and his team have been collaborating with partners in Latin America to bring a simple\, effective and low cost treatment to community centers. Recently\, he spent a month in the city of Cochabamba\, Bolivia\, in the Andes Mountain range. He worked at a primary school where the level of tooth decay is extremely high and two-thirds of the children have mouth pain related to cavities. He will talk about his recent trip there and what was accomplished. \nDr. Duffin earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology in 1979 from the University of California at Los Angeles. he graduated with a doctorate in dental surgery from Emory University in Atlanta\, Georgia in 1983 and is a licensed and certified dentist in Oregon and California. He is the dental director at NoDK\, LLC\, and the owner of Shoreview Dental in Keizer\, Oregon. He also served as the president\, CEO and dental director of one of the largest Medicaid-provider networks in Oregon from 1994 to 2006. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Wilsonville. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community.
