SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Caring for Special Needs Donkeys at Oregon Donkey Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Jim Urquhart from the Donkey Sanctuary of Oregon will present on Caring for Special Needs Donkeys at Oregon Donkey Sanctuary. In 2006\, Jim and Rhonda Urquhart moved to Oregon City from Arizona\, inspired by the braying of a neighboring donkey. This curiosity led them to offer their 40-acre farm as a satellite facility for Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue\, fostering and adopting out neglected and abused donkeys. By 2021\, their dedication to special needs donkeys led to the establishment of Oregon Donkey Sanctuary Northwest. With the help of a dedicated volunteer network\, the Urquharts have managed the remarkable responsibility of providing daily care and furthering their mission. \nEach donkey at the sanctuary has a unique personality and story\, often marked by past neglect or abuse. The sanctuary emphasizes the gentle nature and wonderful personalities of donkeys\, aiming to advance their status and teach humans how to care for them. The ultimate goal is to build an equine therapy program named Pearl’s Place\, in memory of their matriarch Pearl\, to further the healing process for both donkeys and humans. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. Guests are welcome. Lunch is available off the menu; please arrive and order by 11:45 a.m. if you are ordering lunch. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: PDX Housing Solidarity Project

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Oregonian Norm Harrison’s Long-Secret World War II Story
DESCRIPTION:Historian and author Don Bourgeois will share the gripping story of Oregonian Norm Harrison\, a World War II veteran who kept his most haunting experiences in northern Italy a secret for decades. Night after night\, he was plagued by the same chilling nightmare—an unblinking figure in an Army mess hall\, a vision he feared revealing even to his wife\, Italia. Only after her passing did he finally share the memories he had long suppressed. \nOriginally published in the Portland Tribune\, Harrison’s story offers a powerful look at the lasting psychological toll of war. Now being considered for a film or limited series\, this deeply personal account sheds light on the unseen battles many veterans face long after the fighting ends. \nOfficial bio: \nDon Bourgeois was born in November 1944 in Illinois and raised in Iowa City\, Iowa\, where he attended University High School and the University of Iowa. He earned a BA in History in 1968.\nAfter traveling in Europe\, he attended Drake Law School and obtained his JD in 1972. That same year\, he was sworn into the Iowa Bar and immediately left for Oregon\, where he sat for the Oregon Bar. \nBourgeois worked as a public defender until 1975 before transitioning to insurance defense with various law firms. He joined the Washington Bar in 1987\, and his last insurance-related position was as an in-house attorney for State Farm from 1991 to 2003. In 2006-2007\, he served as an assistant attorney general for the Territory of Guam. \nDespite a long career in law\, his true passion has always been World War II history. He has traveled extensively\, visiting dozens of historical sites worldwide. While based in Guam\, he had the opportunity to set foot on Iwo Jima\, Palau\, Peleliu\, the Philippines\, Japan\, Truk\, Midway Atoll\, Kwajalein\, and Saipan\, as well as Hawaii. His journeys have also taken him to numerous sites across Europe and North Africa. Documenting the experiences of the Greatest Generation has been a lifelong pursuit\, and he considers it his duty to chronicle the stories of those who shared their memories with him. \nBourgeois has authored a series of articles for the Portland Tribune on various World War II topics\, including the 80th anniversaries of key events and the service of local veterans who participated in them. \nHe resides in Southwest Portland and has three children and one grandchild\, all of whom live in the Pacific Northwest\, including one in Wilsonville.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Ehlen Road Interchange: What is a Diverging Diamond?
DESCRIPTION:Anna Henson\, ODOT Area 3 Manager for the Mid-Willamette Valley\, will provide an overview of the Ehlen Road Interchange project and explain the innovative diverging diamond interchange (DDI) design coming to Exit 278 on Interstate 5. This critical improvement aims to address growing traffic and safety concerns in the Aurora-Donald area and north Marion County communities. \nOriginally built in the 1960s\, the Ehlen Road Interchange is no longer sufficient to handle the increasing volume of business\, trucking\, and interstate travel in the region. The first phase of improvements addressed immediate concerns by extending and widening the northbound off-ramp\, installing a sound wall for the nearby RV park\, and relocating the Ehlen and Bents roads intersection farther from the interstate while adding a traffic signal. \nAnna will be joined by Ed Chamberland\, ODOT design consultant and senior project manager at David Evans and Associates\, who will share insights from his technical leadership on the project. Together\, they’ll explain how Oregon’s second DDI—proven successful in Medford—will improve traffic flow and safety while accommodating bicyclists and pedestrians\, all within a compact footprint that respects surrounding businesses and residences. \nMindy McCartt\, ODOT Public Information Officer for Region 2\, will also attend to support the presentation and help answer any additional questions.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Access\, Inclusion\, and Empathy: A Theatrical Journey
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Walsh\, Executive Artistic Director of Northwest Classical Theater Collaborative\, will share his personal and professional journey—from assistant directing on Broadway to directing adults in custody at a medium-security prison in Oregon. The program will also introduce participants to mentors in stage management\, costuming\, lighting design\, and other behind-the-scenes roles—creating pathways for skill-building\, supplemental income\, and supportive community post-release. \nThis presentation offers a look at the transformative power of the arts in rehabilitation and the role of theater in building empathy\, connection\, and personal growth.
