SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Rotary-Supported Agroforestry Project in Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Beth Huggins\, Program Director at the Regeneration Field Institute in Ecuador\, will present on regenerative agroforestry work taking place in Chone\, Manabí\, Ecuador. Since 2017\, her team has restored degraded land on a 70-acre farm into thriving agroforestry systems in a region facing drought\, erosion\, and economic instability caused by deforestation and monoculture farming. \nHer presentation will explain how a science-based\, community-led cacao agroforestry model is regenerating soil\, restoring biodiversity\, and increasing farmer incomes. She will also discuss how this approach helps rural communities adapt to climate and market changes\, offering a practical example of environmental restoration paired with economic resilience. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder how Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL) brings free books to children around the world and how the program thrives right here in Oregon? \nRotarian Hilly Alexander will take us behind the scenes to share how 1 in 7 children in the USA receive books from DPIL by highlighting how it works in Wilsonville. Find out who selects the books and how the books get into mailboxes. See some examples and discover the joy of reading all over again. Hilly will also share updated numbers from Wilsonville\, Oregon\, and the US that you can use to brag about the impact we have on early literacy. \nSince 2012\, the Wilsonville program has mailed over 111\,000 books to local children\, with additional sponsorship from the Wilsonville Rotary Foundation to reach families at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility.\nCome hear how this partnership continues to inspire a lifelong love of reading\, one book at a time. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. While still working full time\, Hilly began volunteering at the Wilsonville Public Library\, which eventually turned into a second career. Some highlights of that second career include serving two terms on the Wilsonville Public Library Board and leading the campaign for the Clackamas County Library District in Wilsonville in 2008.  \nHilly currently serves on the Wilsonville Public Library Foundation Board of Directors and is the Executive Director of the Wilsonville Imagination Library\, a local partner of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library\, which she considers her best job ever. She still loves putting books back on the shelf and collecting items that library patrons have put on hold.

Comprising students from both Wilsonville High School and West Linn High School\, the team has been building robots and competing since 2004. His volunteer work includes chairing Wilsonville’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life committee\, organizing church mission trips to central Mexico\, and coaching youth basketball and soccer. His Rotary journey includes serving as club president\, Area Governor from 2022 to 2024\, PETS trainer and facilitator\, member of the district Vision to Action Committee\, and ShelterBox ambassador. \nPat’s professional career included roles at Tektronix\, GE Healthcare\, and several smaller technology startups. In 2007\, he and two partners founded a web-based electronic medical record company\, which they grew to 30 employees before selling the business six years later. \nPat enjoys working as part of a team\, believing collaboration makes service more meaningful\, impactful\, and fun\, while building lasting friendships. He is one of five sons raised in the high-desert logging and farming community of Klamath Falls. After college\, he moved to the country outside Portland\, where he met and married his wife\, Lori\, and together they raised three daughters. When not volunteering or spending time with family\, Pat enjoys biking\, skiing\, camping\, exploring solar and EV technology\, fixing things with his grandkids\, traveling\, and trying new foods\, minus hot peppers.
