SUMMARY:Club Meeting:  Caribbean Latin Music in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Aquiles Montas\, bandleader of Conjunto Alegre\, will be speaking on Caribbean Latin Music in Oregon.  Since coming to Portland 45 years ago\, Aquiles has been a leader in promoting Latin Caribbean culture in Oregon and Washington. He shares his knowledge of the music\, dance\, food\, geography and history of the culture. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nAquiles Montas is the bandleader for the Latin music group Conjunto Alegre\, which has performed in Oregon and Washington for more than 35 years. He immigrated from the Dominican Republic and has been a resident of the Portland area for 45 years. He graduated from Grant High School in Portland then earned his degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Portland State University. He also studied small business management at Portland Community College. He currently works for Multnomah County as the director of a youth enrichment program in the Northeast Cully neighborhood. He is a proud husband\, father\, and now grandfather. \nIn 1984\, Aquiles joined forces with his Dominican friend Pedro Beltran and his Puerto Rican friend Amador Marcano to form the Latin music band Ritmo Tropical. In 1987\, he broke away and formed Conjunto Alegre (Spanish for “happy band”). That band is still performing all around Oregon and Washington 36 years later\, including at the 2023 Wilsonville Rotary Summer Concerts on August 3. He was selected to play for Cirque Du Soleil in 1999 in Portland and 2000 in Seattle\, and has performed and presented at many local events and college campuses. His passion has always been helping people\, particularly recent immigrants to find housing\, jobs\, and health care and with learning the English language. He helps them make connections and find friends through the larger Latin community in the Portland area. \nHis hobbies and interests include teaching\, Spanish\, English\, dancing\, percussion\, cooking\, history\, geography and politics. He will be speaking on the topic of Caribbean music in the Portland area. \n

The BREW Fellowship is one of the newest officially recognized Rotary fellowships. It was created for Rotarians around the world who love to drink and make beer. The BREW Fellowship has been international from the beginning. Its other co-creators include Moses Aryee\, past president of the Rotary Club of Accra-West\, Ghana\, and Past District 5440 Governor Martin Limbird of the Rotary Club of Fort Collins\, Colorado. \nThe goal of BREW is to create the largest fellowship in Rotary. Members also strive to support efforts and projects to bring clean water to those in thirst\, since water is the primary ingredient in beer. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nOfficial bio:  Gale Castillo is the president and co-owner of Canopy\, one of the largest privately held companies that provides a variety of mental health and wellbeing services globally. Canopy has been recognized by the Portland Business Journal in 2023 as the number one small business “Healthiest Employers” and one of the top innovative companies in Oregon Business Employers. \nCastillo is also the chair of the Board of Directors of the Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber (Hispanic Chamber). Castillo previously served as the president and executive director of the Hispanic Chamber for over 20 years. She is one of the founders of the Hispanic Chamber that was established in 1994. \nCastillo has worked in both the public and private sector.  Public service has included working as an assistant to Gov. Neil Goldschmidt\, recommending appointments to boards and commissions.  Ms. Castillo was appointed by the governor as the state manager of the Oregon Economic Development Department’s Job Training Administration. In the private sector\, Ms. Castillo has worked for AT&T\, Pacific Northwest Bell\, and RESTOR Communications in management\, marketing\, and national sales positions. \nCastillo has been recognized by many groups over the years for her community service. The most recent awards include: \n\n2023-The Portland Business Journal Women of Influence\, Joan Austin Impact Award\, the highest award for this event.\n2022-The Mexican Consul of Oregon presented Ms. Castillo with the Ohtli Award\, the highest honor bestowed by the Government of Mexico to individuals that have worked to “open the path” for new Mexican Americans and Hispanic generations.\n2019-Recognized by the Oregon Historical Society as one of “Oregon’s History Makers”.\n2016-Congressman Earl Blumenauer recognized Ms. Castillo at his Annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon for outstanding service.\n2014-Ms. Castillo was presented with the Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement for the Minority Enterprise Development Week by the Business Development Institute for playing an integral role in the progress of minority business development.\nAlso in 2014-Ms. Castillo received a Civic award by the Center for Women’s Leadership.\n\nMs. Castillo has provided community services to a variety of organizations. Her current community involvements include: \n\nHispanic Metropolitan Chamber\, Board Chair\nFederal Reserve Bank of San Francisco\, Portland Branch\, Board Member\nAmerican Leadership Forum\, Class IV Fellow and\nInternational Women’s Forum\, Portland\n\nMs. Castillo is the first in her family to graduate from high school and college. She earned her bachelor of arts from Linfield University\, followed by a master of arts in education from Portland State University. She also completed the Executive Education Program at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government\, and the Leadership Development Program at the Center for Creative Leadership. \nMs. Castillo is Mexican-American. Her family is originally from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas\, which was originally part of Mexico. She was raised in Oakland\, California in an ethnically diverse community. \nMs. Castillo is married to Jerry Brown. They have three sons: Anthony Castillo Brown\, Robert Castillo Mejia\, and Brett Brown.

The past eight years\, she’s been a Project Manager in the Portland office leading teams through engineering design of large highway projects. One of those was the design of the OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project. Once it began construction\, she shifted roles to work in the construction office assisting leadership in the day to day operations. \nLili Boicourt\, a nearly 20-year employee of ODOT works in the Community Affairs office leading outreach activities for many of the highway construction projects in the Portland-metro area. She was on the OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes project team that Kelly led and continues to manage all outreach and communications efforts for that project. \n
