SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Education – A Crisis of Relevance
DESCRIPTION:Former school administrator Michael C. Johnson will give a presentation on the inadequacies of our current system of public education. He is concerned that our current instructional approaches and curriculum expectations are vestiges of the past\, rather than directions that will adequately prepare students for their futures. Further\, he remains convinced that our current educational system lacks the opportunity for many students to realize personal relevance with their studies. Finally\, he is adamant in his belief that the American public education system must move past a pre-occupation with standardized teaching and learning; the very focus that stands in the way of a truly authentic and contemporary learning experience for today’s children.  \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. The club is holding hybrid “Virtual In Person” (VIP) meetings. Attend in person (if masked or vaccinated)\, or attend virtually over Zoom at http://www.tinyurl.com/Rotary97070. Guests are welcome. For more information\, email president@wilsonvillerotary.com. \nAt the time of his retirement in July 2017\, Michael had served students over a 35 year career in public education: 14 years as a performing arts teacher and 21 years as a building administrator. Throughout his career\, and continuing into his retirement\, he is a vocal advocate of arts education and the inclusion of quality arts experiences for all children\, and remains a champion of student-centered approaches to assure a high quality and relevant education for every child. He earned his bachelor degree in music education at Willamette University and his masters in educational leadership from the University of Portland\, with additional administrative studies at Lewis and Clark College and Portland State University.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: District Governor Jim Boyle
DESCRIPTION:Rotary District 5100 Governor Jim Boyle will be our guest speaker. Raised in the Chicagoland area\, Jim and his wife\, Nancy\, have lived in West Linn\, Oregon for the past 25 years. Jim worked at a variety of Fortune 500 companies over the past 30 years prior to leading two consumer electronics companies. After leaving corporate life\, Jim fed his entrepreneur spirit by building and developing high end residential properties and teaching MBA classes. Jim and Nancy raised one son\, Ryan\, and enjoy spending time with and entertaining their two grandchildren. Aside from traveling internationally\, Jim enjoys playing pickleball\, taking challenging hikes\, and is an avid reader. Rotary found Jim when his club held a service project that benefited a women’s shelter and it involved the entire community. He realized then how significantly a small but committed number of Rotarians can impact a community. Through service\, Jim and Nancy have developed lasting friendships and a network that spans the world. Jim has sponsored 24 new members and believes the WORLD NEEDS MORE ROTARIANS.

SUMMARY:Club Meeting: Cumulative Disasters
DESCRIPTION:Fire. Smoke. Ice. Heat. It’s been a rough year or so for Oregon\, with several weather-related disasters hitting the state’s landscape in ways seldom seen before. And no one is more intimately connected with Oregon’s landscape than farmers. Nurseries are the largest segment in Oregon agriculture with more than $1 billion in sales annually. As executive director of the Oregon Association of Nurseries\, Jeff Stone represents the industry before the public and before the state’s elected leaders. It’s his job to marshal resources\, build coalitions and help solve problems facing the industry. Jeff will speak about the disasters of last 12 months\, how they have affected growers\, and what is being done — or not being done — to assist this valuable sector of the Oregon economy that contributes to the green landscape\, both in this state and nationwide. \nNOTE: Previously scheduled speaker Anne-Louise Sterry had to postpone her presentation due to a family matter and we will make every effort to reschedule her for a future date. \nThe Rotary Club of Wilsonville meets weekly Thursdays at noon to carry out its purpose of providing service and fellowship to members and the Wilsonville community. The club is holding hybrid “Virtual In Person” (VIP) meetings. Attend in person (masks required except when eating) at Al Kader Shrine Center\, or attend virtually over Zoom at http://www.tinyurl.com/Rotary97070. Guests are welcome.
