SUMMARY:Speaker: Steve Cook\, Chair of Mecop
DESCRIPTION:Topic:  What Is MECOP (the Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program with OSU\, OIT\, PSU\, and the University of Portland) and Why Is It Successful? \nMr. Cook has been with CH2M Hill for 35 years.  Currently\, he provides program and project management domestically and internationally for complex design and construction projects in Electronics\, Science and Technology markets.  He also serves as the chair of the cooperative effort called MECOP. \nConceived in the summer of 1978\, MECOP was a collaboration between Oregon State University and Oregon-based manufacturing companies that hired engineering graduates.  Faced with a growing gap between the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the work place and those being taught in universities\, three major Oregon companies—Freightliner (now Daimler Trucks)\, Tektronix\, and Bingham-Willamette (now Sulzer-Bingham)—entered into an agreement with OSU’s Department of Industrial Engineering to start the Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP).  Later expanded to OIT\, PSU\, and the University of Portland\, MECOP is a student internship within the engineering industry that demonstrates the power of an effective business/education partnership. Oregon Tech\, for example\, students in Mechanical\, Civil Engineering\, Geomatics and Software Engineering can participate. \nTypically\, students gain real work experience in two six-month internships\, trying out different sectors of industries\, management styles\, etc. This helps students learn early in their career what an engineer really is like. Students normally apply during their sophomore year in college. There are many participating companies\, a few of which are: Wilsonville’s own Mentor Graphics; Intel; Tektronix; and Daimler Trucks.

SUMMARY:Speaker: Bruce Bennett\, owner of Aurora Aviation.
DESCRIPTION:Topic:  Why The Tower Will Be Good For Wilsonville. \nBruce had his first lesson at Aurora Aviation in 1975 while working during high school summer vacation as “line-service” aircraft re-fueler. After three years in Army Aviation as a technician\, in 1979 he returned here as a student in the professional pilot course while working aircraft maintenance at PDX. Continuing his flight training\, Bruce returned full-time in 1980; back on the “line”\, then to flight instructor\, in sales as a Cessna dealer\, on to charter flying\, moving into management and taking charge of the operation in 1986. Certified as an ATP\, he has a flight instructor rating for single engine land & sea\, multi-engine and instrument with type ratings in the Falcon 10\, Beech-Jet\, Premier-Jet\, Phenom 300\, and Hawker. He has acted as Aurora’s chief pilot\, chief flight instructor\, charter jet instructor\, and FAA designated company check airman. His current position is director of operations. Although 12\,115 flight hours is not all that many compared to most career pilots\, having over 99.9% of that exclusively off the Aurora Airport may be a record! His flying has been primarily in the Northwest US\, but he has flown all over the country with dozens of trips to Mexico\, more to Canada and as far away as the Bahamas\, Brazil\, and London from Aurora. \nBruce will provide an update on the tower that is under construction at the Aurora Airport and explain why it will be good for Wilsonville. \n

SUMMARY:Speaker:Rick Thompson\, President of the Lower Columbia Chapter - Ice Age Floods Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Glacial Missoula Floods And Their Effect On Our Backyard. \nA native Oregonian\, Mr. Thompson loves to share the beauty and natural history of the great Northwest. \nBeing intrigued by the land formations\, huge boulders and glacial erratics in this area he embarked on a 20-year study of the effects in NW Oregon and SW Washington of the largest ice age flood which propelled over 500 cubic miles of water\, ice\, rock and mud across eastern Washington\, raced through the Columbia River Gorge\, covered the Willamette Valley with up to 400 feet of water and left gravel bars miles wide and hundreds of feet high.  Though geology is not his profession\, the Lake Missoula Floods have become his passion. \nMr. Thompson is President of the Lower Columbia Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute which holds monthly public educational meetings in Tualatin.  He was instrumental in identifying and securing signage for several significant glacial erratics in Washington County; has been interviewed for a number of newspaper articles and was twice featured on Grant McOmie’s “Grant’s Getaways” television program. \nHe has created self-guided driving tours based on his field trips and has authored two books: “Iceberg Erratics” and “GigaFlood – The Lake Missoula Flood in NW Oregon and SW Washington” which is illustrated with his own photographs\, maps and diagrams to show you the signs still visible today from this catastrophic flood which so affected the Northwest. \n

SUMMARY:Oregon Forest Facts – An Update
DESCRIPTION:Oregonʼs forests are vast — and so too are the issues and challenges that impact their continued health and productivity. In 1991\, the Oregon Legislature created the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI) to enhance collaboration among forest scientists\, public agencies\, community organizations\, conservation groups and forest landowners; to provide objective information about responsible forest management; and to encourage environmentally sound forest practices through training and other educational programs. \nOFRI is a centralized gateway to shared ideas and collaborative dialogue regarding the delicate balance between the environmental\, social and economic values provided by our forests. OFRI is funded by a dedicated harvest tax on producers of forest products. \n

SUMMARY:Speaker: Bruce Bennett\, President of Aurora Aviation
DESCRIPTION:The Tower Is Good News For Aurora Airport. Bruce Bennett\, President of Aurora Aviation. Bruce Bennett had his first flying lesson at Aurora Aviation in 1975 while working during high school summer vacation as “line-service” aircraft refueler. After three years in Army Aviation as a technician he returned here as a student in the professional pilot course in 1979. At the same time\, he worked aircraft maintenance at PDX. Continuing his flight training\, he returned full-time in 1980; back on the “line”\, then to flight instruct\, in sales as a Cessna dealer\, on to charter flying\, moving into management and taking charge of the operation in 1986. In addition to being president\, his current position is director of operations. Although 11\,816 flight hours is not that many compared to most career pilots; having over 99.9% of that exclusively off the Aurora Airport may be a record! His flying has been primarily in the Northwest US but he has flown all over the country with dozens of trips to Mexico\, more to Canada and as far away from Aurora as the Bahamas\, Brazil\, and London. When not here or in the air\, he is with his wife Leann (whom he met here at Aurora Aviation; she is a pilot as well as realtor). They have three children. \nBruce will be on hand to tell us why the tower to be constructed at the airport to our south will be good for the community.
