Whittaker announced as newest First CitizenAt Treasures of Wilsonville: The 2014 Heart of Gold Celebration, Kathryn Whittaker was announced as the 2013 Wilsonville First Citizen. The event, produced by the Rotary Club of Wilsonville, was held March 15, 2014 at the Wilsonville Holiday Inn.
Whittaker was selected from among nominations submitted by the Wilsonville community. These nominations were reviewed by a five-member panel, which selected four finalists and one winner. The other finalists were Leigh Crosby, Steve Perry and Vern Wise.
“We were very impressed by all of the finalists and everything they have done to give back to the Wilsonville community,” President John Holley said. “We were looking for people who embodied the Rotary motto, ‘Service Above Self,’ and these nominees did not disappoint. It was an honor for us to recognize their many contributions and accomplishments.”
Whittaker is a Wilsonville resident who recently completed a three-year term on the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation. For two of those years, she served as president of the foundation, at a time when the organization stepped up its fundraising activity by engaging the community and starting new campaigns. Her district involvement does not end there. She served on the school boundary committee that redrew boundaries for the opening of Lowrie Primary School. She mentors and judges the mock Congressional hearings for eighth grade students at Wood Middle School. Last year, she coached a team to a second-place finish at a national competition in Washington, D.C. And, she volunteers with Lego Robotics, Willamette United Soccer, Boy Scouts, Wilsonville High School Dance Team, and the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program.
“Kathryn has been very dedicated to local schools,” Holley said. “We were impressed with the broad range of ways in which she has been involved.”
The Rotary Club of Wilsonville is now accepting nominations for the next First Citizen, who will be announced at the next Heart of Gold Celebration, which will be held in the first quarter of 2015.
